My greatest strength is dyslexia

“In the business world, dyslexia has been my greatest asset. It has taught me to simplify tasks, overcome obstacles, and focus on my strengths.”

The inspiring testimony of Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin, is the opening statement in Margaret Rooke’s latest book titled “Creative, Successful, Dyslexic.” In this book, 23 well-known people from various fields including business, arts, and sports reveal how dyslexia impacted their childhood. They also explain how they overcame every challenge and utilized their dyslexia strengths to achieve great success in their adult lives.

Branson, for example, explains how dyslexia helped him to adopt unconventional thinking, never to be ashamed of failures, and to understand that great ideas are also the simplest. He writes about his constant learning of new things and gives the example of only discovering at age 50 the difference between “gross” and “net.”

To be a good business leader, again according to Branson, you need to know your strengths, hire people who are smarter than you are and listen to their ideas.”Delegating is a skill that some people do not develop, but if you are dyslexic you need to do it,” he writes.

It is widely known that learning about the experiences of other dyslexics, regardless of their level of fame, can be inspiring for those with learning disabilities. They can often find similarities and say things like “I experience that too.” Richard Branson was deemed a hopeless student in school, but he persevered and became one of the wealthiest and most influential individuals on the planet.

On this he writes, “Dyslexia has taught me to face challenges. If you are not exceptional in school, you can always be exceptional in life.”

Finally he leaves some valuable advice for readers, “Accept your different way of thinking, question what others take for granted, trust your instincts, seize opportunities that others miss, keep an open mind and learn from what you do.If you follow your dreams you can be more successful than others.

Margaret Rooke’s book is available for now only in English. The hope is that an Italian version will come sooner or later.
